Fire Devastates Community of NYC

At least 19 people are dead and over 30 others were injured during a five-alarm fire at a high-rise apartment building in the #Bronx, #NYC. Nine children are said to be among the dead. Officials are calling this the worst fire the city has seen in over 30 years. Officials say a portable space heater is to blame for starting the fire.

To add to the devastation, 44 people were injured. 13 of those were critically injured. Disaster struck after the tenants of the third-floor apartment where the fire started; fled without closing the door behind them. This is all according to fire commissioner, Daniel A. Nigro, when he spoke at a news conference at the scene.

Eric Adams, the newly elected mayor of New York City, pledged support to the victims. Governor Kathy Hochul reinforced this sentiment with a pledge of her own to give funding to the victims in her upcoming budget proposal.
