Italian Volunteer Killed Fighting for Self-Declared Donetsk People’s Republic

The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed to Italian press today that Elia Putzolu, 28, from Sardina, Italy was killed fighting in the vicinity of Donetsk. He is the third Italian to be killed in the war. The first was on March 30th when Edy Ongaro, 45 from Veneto was killed in the Donbass fighting alongside DPR forces.

Benjamin Giorgio Galli, 27, from Varese was killed near Kharkiv fighting in the Ukrainian Foreign Legion last month. Prior to the Russian invasion of February 24th, an estimated 17,000 foreign fighters migrated to Ukraine and Russia to join their militaries. Since then, an estimated additional 20,000 foreigners have been registered entering Ukraine.
