One Sailor Killed, Two Recovered from E-2 Crash in Virginia

Date:

The United States Navy has confirmed 1 sailor was killed and 2 missing as E-2D Hawkeye crashed off the coast of Chincoteague, Virginia.

Lt. Cmdr. Rob Myers, a public affairs officer with Naval Air Force Atlantic, said the plane was on a routine exercise when it went down.

Two individuals have been recovered from the E-2D that went down at approximately 7:30 PM Wednesday evening. The call came in to 911 at 7:31.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company launched boats to locate the wreckage along with Maryland State Police Trooper 4 and a Coast Guard Helicopter from Elizabeth City. A military aircraft was over the scene of the crash and directed the boats to the location. Two crew members were found injured on the top of the wreckage and were rescued and transported to the Wallops Flight Facility airport. Both were transported to Tidal Health Hospital in Salisbury.

The sailor who died apparently was trapped in the sinking aircraft. The two injured apparently have suffered broken legs among other injuries.

Local news and other outlets have mistakenly reported this crash as a Navy V-22 Osprey crash. It is not.
