U.S. Drafts UN Security Council Notice for Multinational Force Deployment to Haiti

According to the draft resolution obtained by the Miami Herald, the United States has reportedly decided to appeal to the United Nations Security Council to form a multi-national military force to deploy to Haiti. According to several U.S. sources, the Biden Administration is drafting the official notice in response to the U.N. Secretary-General requesting such force be sent to the struggling island nation. This is the first indicator that the U.S. has acted on the request of the Haitian Prime Minister. The obtained documents have not alluded to a potential delivery to the UNSC or deployment dates.

On October 11th, 2022, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henri officially requested a U.N. peacekeeping force to come to Haiti, much like the force that was deployed from 2004 to 2017.

The Haitain capital of Port-au-Prince has been besieged by criminal groups since early July, especially by groups such as G9 and 400 Mawozo. In fact, G9 leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier has even told press that the Haitian government’s request for forces should not be taken seriously.

The United States has already deployed the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Northland to Haiti which is currently conducting joint patrols with their Navy. The Canadian government has also promised to deploy military aircraft between October 15th and 19th for a prolonged mission on the island nation. It is not clear if the French government would also be involved in sending military assets to Haiti, although their historical presence there and their participation in the former peacekeeping mission makes them a prime candidate for this mission.
