According to Russian state owned media, the government of the Russian Federation has suspended the agreement to allow civilian shipping to safely deliver grain to international markets via a corridor in the Black Sea. This announcement comes after a Ukrainian drone attack against the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol last night.
“Taking into account the terrorist act carried out by the Kyiv regime on October 29 this year with the participation of British specialists against ships of the Black Sea Fleet and civilian vessels involved in ensuring the security of the grain corridor, the Russian side suspends participation in the implementation of agreements on the export of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports,”- Russian Ministry of Defense.
The Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports, also called the Black Sea Grain Initiative, was an agreement between Russia and Ukraine with Turkey and the United Nations (UN) made during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Following the deal, wheat prices dropped to pre-war levels. The first ship departed on August 1st, 2022. Since then, 373 voyages were made by dozens of ships. That supply is now ended and is expected to have major effects as Winter approaches, impacting developing nations.
