Considered the last bastion of the Tuareg separatist movement, the commune of Tinzaouaten near the Algerian border, is today the target of the Malian armed forces (FAMA) and their Russian auxiliaries. Seeking to retake the commune–which doubles as the site of one of the most devastating defeats suffered by the Malian army and their Russian aids in late July–the press service of the Alliance of the Sahel States (AES) announced the onset of the counter-terrorism offensive on September 30th.
