Iraq Protestors Storm Swedish Embassy in Baghdad, Set it on Fire in Response to Recent Quran Burnings

For the second time in less than a month, supporters of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad. This appears to be a direct response to Swedish authorities granting the permit of a protest set to be outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm for tomorrow, which would involve burning the Quran.

The first storming happened on June 29, which resulted in the embassy being evacuated. Sadrists overwhelmed local security forces, scaling walls as they breached the compound. This was in response to a Quran burning that took place the same day in Stockholm.

Tonight, Sadrists stormed the embassy again, which remained empty, where they ransacked offices and set fire to the building.

The incident is ongoing.
