ECOWAS Activates Standby Force

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has activated its standby force and has order its deployment "to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger" following last month's coup that saw President Mohamed Bazoum be removed from power. The activation does not mean that military intervention is imminent, but signals that ECOWAS forces are prepared to enter the country as negotiations continue.
