India’s National Automatic Identification System (NAIS) is one of the largest currently deployed, according to Saab India in a report released on February 8th.
Made up of around 70 lighthouses, it increases maritime safety and security by improving resource management and protecting the environment along the Indian coastline. Saab worked with Elcome Marine Services to develop and build the network.
NAIS identifies and actively tracks ships using AIS information and transfers the data to various control centers, giving officials a glimpse of all activity on the water.
Although the system is noteworthy and does give India solid coverage, more evidence is needed to reinforce Saab’s claims, as there are similar setups across the globe.
