Russia’s prison service has announced that Alexei Navalny, a key opposition figure in Russian politics and an anti-Putin activist, has died while being held in jail. His jail was located approximately 40 miles north of the Arctic circle.
Russia has stated they have no information on Navalny’s cause of death, and thus the exact circumstances of his death remain presently unclear. It is worth noting that Navalny has been the victim of a suspected assassination attempt in the past, after he was poisoned in 2020.
Navalny was 47 years old, and had been one of the most prominent voices within Russia speaking against Putin. He was in the Arctic prison serving a 19 year sentence for extremism charges, his first more than 30 years of different criminal charges brought against him by Russian courts.
