U.S. Sells Link-16 Communications System to Taiwan

On February 23, it was reported that the United States government approved the sale of the Link 16 communications systems to Taiwan.

According to the Department of Defense, Link 16 is a “tactical data link communication system used by the United States, NATO, and coalition forces to transmit and exchange real-time situational awareness data among all network participants”.

This system would allow Taiwan to interlink all of its US-made military hardware onto a single communications platform, greatly increasing combat and logistical efficiency.

This announcement comes as a delegation of American representatives is in Taiwan visiting Taiwanese political and social leaders. This also comes as China has increased its aggressive behaviors in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.
