Transnistria Calls on Russia for Support Against “Increasing Pressure” from Moldova

During a special congress held today, the government of the Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria has formally asked Russia for protection “in the context of increasing pressure from Moldova,” which it has described as an “economic blockade.” The type or extend of this “protection” was not specified.

The congress was highly anticipated amid rumors and claims that Transnistria would ask to be annexed by Russia, which has since been denied by Transnistrian officials.

President Vladimir Putin is also set to make a speech in front of the Russian Federal Assembly tomorrow, raising further questions as to what is next.
