The Maldivian Election Commission decided to hold the elections on April 21st from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time, and votes will be counted at 4:30 p.m..
Previously, the legislative elections were scheduled for March 17th, during Ramadan. However, the Parliament ratified a bill to move the elections to after the holiday, but President Mohammed Muizzu refused to ratify the bill the first time it was sent.
However, Parliament passed the bill a second time, overriding Muizzu’s presidential veto. The president then signed the bill into law on the advice of the country’s Attorney General.
