Myanmar Junta Shells Market in the Rakhine State Capital

The Myanmar military fired artillery at Myoma Market in the Rakhine capital city of Sittwe on February 29th. the shelling resulted in at least 12 civilians and injuring at least 80 people, with at least 31 seriously injured.

The shelling allegedly originated from a naval base in the city and occurred at 8 a.m. local time during the market’s busy hours.

Several news outlets and social media accounts report that the Junta shelled various areas of the city since February 28th. Some residents said that the Junta is launching artillery in preparation of an expected assault by the Arakan Army and other opposition forces.
