Philippine Coast Guard Regains Access to Facebook Page

After being hacked earlier this week, Philippine officials regained control over the Facebook profile for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on February 29th, at 5:45 am local time.

Three accounts were removed from having access to the Facebook page: Fatima Hasan, Murat Kansu, and Vicky Bates. An ongoing investigation is currently underway to determine the location of these hackers. To gain access, they used malware on February 26th.

Additionally, the Cybercrime Investigation Coordinating Center will conduct checks on all office laptops and computers of the PCG Public Affairs, as well as strengthen cybersecurity and remove remaining traces of malware.

“The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center under the Department of Information and Communications Technology worked with the PCG in conducting backend operations, leading to the discovery and removal of the three hackers,” said PCG Rear Admiral Armando Balilo.

Balilo said that the hackers did not access or compromise any sensitive information, only what is already publicly available in the public domain.
