Iraqi National and Former ISIS Fighter Arrested, Esslingen, Germany

According to the German Federal Court of Justice, the Federal Criminal Police Office in Esslingen, with the support from the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office and the Esslingen Criminal Police Directorate, have arrested Mahmoud A. for planning to carry out attacks on behalf of ISIS in Germany.

According to the announcement:

“Mahmoud A. joined the foreign terrorist organization “Islamic State (IS)” in Iraq in May 2016 at the latest. In the following period, he was also active as a fighter for the organization. After entering the Federal Republic of Germany in October 2022, he was ready to commit attacks on behalf of IS.”

The arrest warrant was issued on June 17th, 2024, and he was arrested on the 19th.

The accused reportedly fought for ISIS in Iraq between mid-2012 and mid-2015, then joined the Iraqi Armed Forces in 2016.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser commented:

“Our security agencies are extremely vigilant, follow every tip and strike hard to protect our country against Islamist threats.”
