Armed police quickly locked down Universitetskaya Square and asked civilians to stay in their homes. Police officers lifted the cordon at approximately 1650 EST after the threat to the public was declared over.

The Russian Internal Affairs Ministry reported that the search for armed gunmen had concluded.

This comes only two days after a deadly dual-terror attack on Makhachkala and Derbent in which ISIS-K praised the reported Caucus Insurgency fighters for their actions. Fifteen of the victims were police officers; one was an Orthodox priest who was killed in his church.

It is not currently clear if today’s incident is connected to the cell that carried out Sunday’s attack.
