Four Swedish Nationals Sentenced to Death in Iraq

The Swedish Foreign Ministry has confirmed to press that it summoned the Iraqi Charge d’Affaires over reports of four Swedish nationals being sentenced to death in Iraq. The Swedish Foreign Ministry made this comment:

”The information about the death penalty is very serious and we are acting so that the sentence is not carried…The Foreign Ministry will summon Iraq’s charge d’affair to protest the death sentence…Sweden always condemns the death penalty. We always oppose this. Three of the sentences concern an involvement in a shooting. The fourth sentence, which has not been confirmed, will deal with drug-related crime. The Swedish embassy in Baghdad is in contact with local authorities and has had some contact with the detainees, as well as with relatives.”

No announcement on the sentences have been made by Iraqi judicial authorities or the Foreign Ministry. Very few details concerning the incident are available at this time.

This is developing.
