Norway to Donate Six F-16s to Ukraine

According to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labor), Norway will donate six F-16 tactical aircraft to Ukraine. His announcement reads below:

“Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against attacks from the air is absolutely crucial in their defensive fight against Russia. Norway has now decided that we will donate six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. We aim to start the donations during 2024.”

This is the first announcement on the donation of F-16s to Ukraine since August 2023 when the Norwegian Prime Minister promised to donate a number of F-16s that would be less than ten airframes.

Norway phased out its forty-year-old fleet of F-16s for the F-35 in 2021 and sold a large portion of its fleet (32) to Romania. However, it still had a small number of them on hand.

These six F-16s will complement the 85 already pledged for donation. On May 28th, 2024, Ukrainian President Zelensky announced that Belgium would donate 30 surplus F-16s, fulfilling Ukrainian desires for four squadrons of the fourth-generation fighters.
