Mexico To “Pause” Relationship With US and Canadian Embassies Due to Judicial Reform Comments

Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) announced today, August 27, 2024, that his government would put the relationship with the US and Canadian embassies on hold. The Mexican president said in a press conference that the decision was due to the US and Canadian positions regarding AMLO's proposed judicial reform. "They have to learn to respect Mexico's sovereignty," he continued. AMLO specified that Mexico would pause its relations with the US and Canadian embassies, not the countries as a whole.
