The Colombian Conflict

The Colombian Conflict, also known as La Violencia, has been ongoing for over 60 years and is characterized by a multifaceted war between the Colombian government and various armed groups. It started with the assassination of left-wing presidential candidate Jorge Eliécer Gaitán in 1948, which led to riots and political discontent. The conflict has involved the FARC EMC, the ELN, and right-wing paramilitary groups. The FARC EMC and the Colombian government entered into a ceasefire in 2016, but it was dissolved in 2021 after a series of attacks. The current government under President Gustavo Petro has expressed a desire for peace talks, but the government has rejected the idea.
