Criminal groups in Rio attacked military police with grenades and molotov cocktails in the Praça Seca area. In videos that began surfacing online heavy armour police vehicles can be seen set alight by the explosives. The criminal groups reportedly shot at the police and threw objects before later using explosives after the military police advanced.

One local outlet is reporting the violence was in response to the death of a senior drug trafficking figure in Rio, Deivid Odilon Carvalho de Oliveira. He was killed last Sunday
No police officers were killed or seriously injured in the violence.
