At approximately 0730 EST initial reports began to emerge of an explosion at Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party workers’ convention in Bajaur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan is a Deobandi Sunni political party in Pakistan. The initial explosion is shown here, where a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest near the stage of the rally.

By 0833 EST, the death toll had risen to 40 killed and more than 150 injured. Among the dead included Khar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Amir Maulana Ziaullah. Nawagai, Bajaur Agency, Pakistan Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam General Secretary Maulana Hameedullah Haqqani was also killed.

By 1000 EST, the Pakistani military had begun evacuation flights using army helicopters and security forces had secured the scene. Pakistani Minister State Sanaullah. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan Chief Minister Khan, the Afghan Taliban Interim Government, Pakistan Prime Minster Sharif, and former Pakistan Prime Minister Khan all condemned the attack. Most conspicuously, Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan also condemned the attack.
As of 1200 EST, Pakistani Armed Forces Major General Wall was supervising the relief efforts and investigation.
