Rwanda Dismisses Senior Military Officials

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame dismissed over 200 Rwandan Defense Force soldiers in a potential crack down on corruption and violations of the military Code of Conduct.

In a communique dated August 30th, the Rwandan Defense Force (RDF) announced President Paul Kagame's dismissal of Major General Martin Nzaramba, Colonel Dr. Etienne Uwinana as well as "19 other senior and junior officers." A further 195 contracts of lower-ranked personnel were dismissed or revoked.

Two days later President Kagame, through an RDF communique announced the promotion of two Colonels to the rank of Brigadier General, fourteen Lieutenant Colonels to Colonel, thirty Majors' to Lieutenant Colonel, and two-hundred and eighty Captains to Major, among several other promotions.

Nzaramba's Dismissal is thought to have come as the result of his involvement in corruption and the mismanagement of funding while he served as the head of Nasho Basic Military Training Center, according to a spokesperson for the RDF.

Moreover, Uwimana allegedly violated the military code of conduct, according to the spokesperson.
