U.S. Citizen Sentenced With Espionage Charges, Moscow, Russian Federation

According to Russian state-owned media, U.S. citizen Gene Spector, has been charged with espionage after being convicted of a bribery scheme.

Their report reads below:

The Lefortovo Court of Moscow has taken into custody on charges of espionage a native of Russia, a US citizen, Gene (Evgeny) Spector, who was previously convicted in a bribe case against the former assistant to former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

“The court granted the request of the investigation to detain US citizen Spector on charges under Article 276 (espionage) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.”

Spector was convicted of bribes to Anastasia Alekseeva, Dvorkovich’s ex-assistant in 2022 for the alleged crimes spanning from 2014-2016. He was sentenced to 3.5 years initially. However, it is not currently clear if Spector served that sentence and was re-arrested for these charges.

According to TASS: “Spektor was born and raised in Leningrad, but later moved to the United States and became a citizen there. He was the chairman of the board of directors of the Medpolymerprom Group of Companies, which specialized in drugs for cancer.”

Spector joins a growing list of U.S. citizens in Russian prison for espionage including Paul Whelan, who Secretary of State Blinken recently called, and Wall Street Jountal writer, Evan Gershkovich.

This is developing.
