The Past & Present of the US-Saudi Relationship

Between 1945 and the mid-2010s, the United States and Saudi Arabia enjoyed a special partnership. From President Franklin D. Roosevelt's famous meeting with Saudi King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud aboard the USS Quincy in the Suez Canal in 1945, to US support for Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, to the US-led coalition's expulsion of Iraqi troops from Kuwait in 1991, oil-for-security proved to be a strong foundation for Saudi-American alignment. The US needed engagement with Saudi Arabia to maintain energy flows and anchor stability in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia, for its part, gained immense wealth and security and later integrated into the global economy as a major energy player. Today, the relationship remains rooted in mutual strategic interests: the US relies on Saudi Arabia as a counterbalance to Iranian influence and the Saudis continue to rely on American arms sales and military protection.
