Denmark's New Africa Strategy Aims to Strengthen Ties Amid Geopolitical Shifts

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday its latest 'Africa Strategy' which seeks to position Denmark and the wider European Union as 'Africa's preferred partner.'

Closing its embassies in junta-ruled Mali and Burkina Faso, Denmark announced its plan to open new embassies in Rwanda, Tunisia, and Senegal, seeking to hold 10 additional diplomats in the continent by 2026.

Business and development cooperation, academic exchanges, climate adaptation, as well as cooperation on green energy and water initiatives are at the fore of the strategy, with Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stating, "one of this century's most important foreign policy questions is whether Africa will orient itself more towards the East or the West."
