Russian Jail “Carousel” For Critics of War or Government

Updated on

Russian police are reportedly heavily adhering to a constant method of arrests and jailing targeting critics of the Russo-Ukrainian War, law enforcement, or the government. The system operates wherein once citizens are released from jail for minor crimes, even misdemeanors, they are immediately, or very swiftly within a few days or a week, arrested again and sent back to jail for another charge that was being held until they were released. This effectively allows a constant cycle, or "carousel," of individuals going in and out of the legal system at the leisure and deliberate choice of the Russian justice system. This method both works to quiet the voices of protestors and inflict financial strife on them. It also allows prosecutors to essentially extend the amount of time they have to construct a more damning case in court.
