Philippine Senate Ordered the Arrest of Alice Guo and Seven Others For Contempt

On July 10th, the Philippine Senate cited and ordered the arrest of the mayor of the city of Bamban, Alice Guo, and seven other individuals for not appearing for a Senate hearing on their ties to a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator in the town.

The panel accepted the proposal after Guo and the other individuals were found in contempt for not appearing before the Senate. Philippine Senator Risa Hontiveros said the committee ordered “the arrest of the persons in contempt to be submitted to the Senate President for his signature.”

The Senate’s decision came as Guo’s lawyers submitted an appeal to the Philippine Supreme Court to annul the Senate’s subpoena for her to appear in front of the committee. The lawyers also asked the court to issue a temporary restraining order.

The lawyers said that Guo’s “life, liberty, and security were put in danger” due to the hearings.
