Sweden and Turkey Suspend Talks on NATO Ascension

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto, Sweden’s Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu, Sweden’s Foreign Minister Ann Linde and Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto at the NATO Madrid summit.

The Swedish Foreign Minister, Tobias Billstrom, announced that his country would be suspending their bid to join NATO. This comes after Erdogan suspended talks after increased discontent formed between Turkey and Sweden over what Turkey called “anti-turkey and Islamophobic protests by PKK supporters” in Stockholm. The Swedish Foreign Minister went on to say that his nation still hopes they can join the military alliance in the summer of this year. In response to this recent development, Finish officials have said they are considering joining NATO without their western neighbor.
