Niger Experiences Blackouts Following Coup

What you need to know:

Following last week’s coup, major cities across Niger have experienced power blackouts. Niger’s electrical company, Nigelec, says the blackouts are a result of Nigeria cutting supplies to the country. These blackouts have largely been experienced in Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder–with power being cut off for up to several hours at a time. These cuts will have affected at least roughly 2.2 million people. The BBC claims that an anonymous source informed them that these power cuts began on Tuesday following a presidential directive.
