The Nahal Brigade is one of five IDF infantry Brigades, with Yonatan, 42, assuming his position with the Brigade in May, taking over from Colonel Oran Simha. To date, Steinberg is the most senior IDF member to be killed by militants in the current conflict.
The Kerem Shalom crossing has been one of the only entry points for goods between the Gaza Strip and Israel, however, the gateway was closed for a week in September after Palestinians were caught attempting to transfer several kilograms of ‘high-quality explosives’ across the border.
