US Marine Arrested for DUI in Okinawa

On Sunday night, police in Okinawa City, Okinawa Prefecture, arrested a 22-year-old Marine accused of driving while intoxicated. The Marine is posted at Futenma Air Base in Ginowan and has the rank of Corporal.

Police reported to Kyodo News that the individual has denied being intoxicated but has not answered further questions since his arrest.

According to police, around 12:40 AM local time, an officer on duty spotted a car driving erratically and pulled it over. The suspect was then given a breathalyzer test, revealing an alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.

It should be noted that Okinawa has a long history of anger towards US military personnel stationed on the island for reasons including repeated cases of deadly drunk driving incidents, chemical pollution, and violence.
