Hungary’s President Resigns Over Scandal

Hungarian President Katalin Novák has resigned amid backlash from a 2023 pardon she issued to an orphanage deputy director involved in a child sex abuse case.

Per Hungarian law, her resignation must be accepted by the legislature for it to take effect. If the resignation is accepted, László Kövér, President of the National Assembly, will fulfill the duties of president until the next president is inaugurated.

Hungary’s next presidential election will be held no later than March 11th, 2024.
