Palauan President Surangel Whipps Jr Announces Re-Election Bid

Palauan President Surangel Whipps Jr. announced his re-election campaign on February 11th, making him the first candidate for November’s 2024 general election.

While addressing a crowd in Koksai, Whipps Jr. brought up his administration’s accomplishments, like the renegotiation of the Compact of Free Association with the United States and the Comprehensive Tax Reform (PGST).

Whipps also mentioned those who are critical of PGST but defended it by saying it produced revenue for social programs such as children’s subsidies and tax refunds.

The current president also mentioned his family moving from the United States and building a life and family on Palau to further illustrate his connection to the island.

Lastly, the president committed to improving the lives and well-being of the general population, along with furthering current tasks and responsibilities.
