South Korea’s government has decided to revise its unification plans with North Korea, including the idea of “liberal democracy,” said a South Korean official on Friday. The revision marks the first time South Korea will revise its National Community Unification Formula. South Korea developed the unification policy in 1994 under former President Kim Young-Sam’s administration.
“The National Community Unification Formula, which has served as the official unification plan of our government so far, leaves out the philosophy of liberal democracy that we currently aim for,” the senior official of the presidential office said to reporters, stressing the implementation of liberal democracy.
The senior official also said, “The fact that the South and the North have produced different results in the past 70 years since division clearly shows the path that is right and desired by everyone.”
