Former First Lady of Honduras Announces Bid for Presidency Amid Husband’s Drug Trafficking Charges

“Ana Garcia de Hernandez stated her plans to run for president in the next election cycle despite her husband and ex-president, Juan Orlando Hernandez, having been arrested on U.S. drug trafficking charges.

This announcement came on Tuesday, March 12th, when Hernandez promised in a press conference that “from this moment I will start an active and proactive fight for the world to know the injustice that was committed.” In order to run, Hernandez will have to secure the Hernandez Party nomination.

“I know what has to be done, I know the job, I know the dedication and the fight my husband has had every day, and I know Honduras’ great needs, and one of the greatest is the injustice we’ve just seen,” she later added.

A lawmaker in the ruling LIBRE party, Marco Eliud Giron, stated that although Garcia de Hernandez could run, she would need to be aware of her husband’s drug connections.

The ex-President was arrested three months after leaving office in 2022 at his home in the country’s capital, Tegucigalpa. Following his arrest, the former- president was extradited to the United States in April of the same year. During the trial, he maintained his innocence but faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
