Indian Navy Submitted Plans for Second Indigenous Aircraft Carrier

The Indian Navy has reportedly submitted its proposal calling for the production of India’s third aircraft carrier. The third carrier would be the second one locally built in India after the INS Vikrant. The carrier, if approved and built, would expand the maritime capabilities of India in the Indian Ocean Region.

Currently, India has two aircraft carriers: the ex-Russian aircraft carrier, the INS Vikramaditya, inducted in 2014, and the domestically built INS Vikrant in 2022.

The hypothetical third aircraft carrier will share similarities with the Vikrant in terms of design. However, the potential carrier will likely have several improvements, such as the capability to house and launch larger aircraft. Another improvement would be the ability to launch various types of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
