2 TB of Philippine Department of Science and Technology Data Breached

A total of two terabytes worth of data stored in the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) was hacked on Tuesday, April 2nd.

This incident is the largest ever during the Marcos administration, according to DOST spokesperson Aboy Paraiso.

Although the size is record-setting, Paraiso claimed last year’s 600 GB of personal data from the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation was held in a ransomware attack is more serious.

“Since it’s old drawings, old schematics, it’s not that significant unlike what happened to PhilHealth because it’s more of personal data,” Paraiso said about the breach. Some data belonging to DOST employees was potentially breached.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum claimed the affected IT infrastructures were singled out and contained moments after the hacking and said his agency has a “recovery plan.”

“Our technical teams are working diligently to address any vulnerability and reinforce our cyber systems,” Solidum stated in a press release today, April 3rd.
