The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region released a statement about the U.K. charging three employees from the city’s Economic and Trade Office on May 13th.
U.K. authorities indicted the three individuals for violating the country’s 2023 National Security Act, specifically assisting a foreign intelligence service, and for foreign interference.
The statement demanded that the U.K. side fairly handle the matter and effectively protect the legitimate rights and interests of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office’s Office Manager, Chung Biu Yuen, who was among the three arrested. The statement also called for the U.K. to ensure that the office’s normal work is not affected by the arrest and investigation.
Update: In a Monday press release, the Hong Kong government has urged the UK to provide full details of the arrest of Chung Biu Yuen, office manager of London's Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office's Office. https://t.co/WuPHbmVpU6 pic.twitter.com/d9JIWr2wzm
