France Declares State of Emergency in New Caledonia

France declared a state of emergency for the overseas territory of New Caledonia on May 16th in response to protests due to a constitutional amendment passed by France’s lower house, the National Assembly.

The country also banned the social media app TikTok as part of the state of emergency.

The French military also deployed units to guard Noumea’s port and La Tontouta International Airport.

The protests caused significant damage to infrastructure, injured several dozen law enforcement personnel, and caused the deaths of three Kanak youths and one gendarme.
