Carlos Removed as Commander of Philippines Armed Forces Western Command

A Philippine news outlet reports that the Armed Forces of the Philippines removed Vice Admiral Carlos Alberto as Commander of the Philippine Armed Forces (AFP) Western Command on May 18th, Philippines time.

The AFP said that Carlos was officially replaced by Philippine Navy Rear Admiral Alfonso Torres Jr. Furthermore, the AFP said that Torres’ designation as commander is “an administrative decision.”

The organization said it is part of “the ongoing changes in leadership and key positions within the military” and that it is “necessary for the institution to adapt to an evolving security environment and address emerging challenges.”

Carlos allegedly agreed with a Chinese diplomat to a “new model” regarding the management of Second Thomas Shoal in January 2024.
