South Korea Military Says North Korea Rocket Launch Failed

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that the military detected the suspected launch of the space rocket from the Sohae Satellite Launch site. The rocket reportedly carried North Korea’s second military reconnaissance satellite.

The JCS said the projectile was detected in multiple pieces in the country’s waters two minutes after its launch at 10:44 p.m. local time.

North Korea released a statement that confirmed the satellite failed “due to a midair explosion during its first-stage flight.”
