Russian border guards have reportedly withdrawn from the Armenian Nerkin Hand village at the border with Azerbaijan. These troops were stationed there after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
This development follows Armenia’s announcement of a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, which involves ceding territory for border recognition. The move has sparked protests in Armenia over recent weeks.
The withdrawal of Russian border guards could imply that another border delimitation agreement between Yerevan and Baku is underway, although no new official agreements have been announced.
If this proves to be the case, further withdrawals from other parts of southern Syunik province, now bordering Azerbaijan, could also occur.
