Russia and India May Renew Talks Over Fighter Aircraft Acquisition

Russia and India might be reconsidering the concept of jointly developing a 5th generation fighter aircraft, as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia later this month, his first visit since his third term win.

The joint project, referred to as the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft, was going to be a two-seater variant built off of Russia’s SU-57. Initially, India pulled out of the project in 2018 due to worries due to the SU-57’s capabilities.

When offered the single-engine, stealth oriented SU-75 fighter aircraft, India was reluctant to purchase it.

The upcoming visit may clarify India’s plans to pursue a 5th generation fighter aircraft.
