Kherson Now Under Full Russian Authority

Kherson mayor Igor Kolykhaev has told NYT Reporter Michael Schwirtz that the city has come under complete Russian military control and that “he met today with the Russian commander who plans to set up a military administration [in the city].” This marks the first major Ukrainian city to come under Russian control during the invasion.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has declared that Russian forces have taken full control of the city of Kherson two days after an offensive was started to push into the city. As I posted before, Russian forces moved primarily into northern and western parts of the city on Monday, but have now expanded into eastern and central parts of the city, such as Liberty Square. Fighting broke out last night in central and southern parts of the city, suggesting there is still resistance. Ukrainian officials have acknowledged that the city has been surrounded and entered, but have denied that it is under complete Russian control.
