US to Deploy Official to Tokyo to Monitor Chinese Influence

On May 19, State Department sources reported that the Biden Administration ordered a dedicated official to Tokyo to monitor “Chinese governmental and business activities” according to The Mainichi, a Japanese news service.

This is part of a broader initiative by the US, as it follows around 20 similar deployments of officials to various global capitals to monitor Chinese activities.

These are diplomats who are officially categorized as Regional China Officers. In addition to monitoring Chinese activities, this diplomat will also focus on “promoting the establishment of supply chains” for advanced technological goods, mainly semiconductors, according to the South China Morning Post.

This comes as tensions between China and the US have remained high due to Chinese aggression towards American allies, the expansion of global Chinese influence, and the rapid modernization of the Chinese military.
