#Nicaragua announced today that it has severed diplomatic relations with #Taiwan, stating that “The People’s Republic of #China is the only legitimate government that represents all of China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory.” Taiwan responded by saying “The Ortega presidency disregarded the long-term friendship between Taiwanese and Nicaraguan that shared weal and woe. We are very sorry to see that,” and that they will also break diplomatic ties and recall diplomats from the country.

China’s ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, tweeted out “We highly commend the right decision made by the Government of Nicaragua, which is in line with the prevailing trend of the time and people’s aspiration,” adding “The One-China principle is a consensus widely accepted by the international community and allows no challenge.” The announcement comes as Nicaragua has received and sought out increased Chinese investments, namely for telecommunications and the proposed Nicaragua Canal project, which has been shaky to say the least due to financing issues as concerns of its viability still remain. Back in 2019, Nicaragua faced increasing pressure from China over its strong ties with Taiwan, which had got in the way of government investments. #AtlasNewsUpdateNicaragua
