Bulgaria Re-Locates Entire Fighter Fleet Due to Airfield Construction

From the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense:

“Airspace security duty will be performed from Plovdiv Airport. The command and personnel of the Graf Ignatievo Air Base carried out today, September 21, the successful rebasing of aviation, aircraft maintenance and special equipment at Plovdiv Airport. The rebasing is necessary in connection with the start of the large-scale reconstruction at the Graf Ignatievo Air Base.

This evening, the crews of the MiG-29, which continuously perform the mission of Air Policing – protection of the airspace of the Republic of Bulgaria in the integrated system of anti-air and anti-missile defense of NATO, will stand up from their new place. The overall event will also take place from Plovdiv Airport”

All Bulgarian MiG-29s have been relocated 144km SouthEast to Plovdiv.

Graf Ignatievo or,the 3rd Fighter Air Base, is Bulgaria’s sole remaining air defence fighter base, taking part in and housing virtually every national and multi-national exercise, involving Bulgarian MiG-29 & Su-25 fighter aircraft . Future plans concern the merging of the 3rd Fighter Air Base at Graf Ignatievo airfield and the 22nd Ground Attack Air Base at Bezmer airfield in one air base in order for the 22nd GAAB to give way to future American military facilities.
