At approximately 0837 EST, initial reports began to emerge of a hot water pipe burst inside the Vremena Goda shopping mall on Kutuzovsky Prospekt in Moscow, Russia. Initially, 70 people were reported to have sustained burns from the hot water and gas. At least 20 people were trapped by a wall of hot water and steam before emergency services arrived.
By 1004 EST, Moscow Mayor Sobyanin reported that four people were dead and nine had to be transported to local hospitals for serious burns. As of this publication, the smell of ammonia is still potent on the second floor of the shopping mall and emergency services are still on scene. Several road closures have impacted traffic in the popular Kutuzovsky Prospekt.
Closures are expected to continue while a criminal negligence case has been opened on the mall operator and contractors.
